Welcome to DECOtimes - Surface Gel Tek's bi-monthly newsletter. Thanks for clicking in.

We are dedicated to sharing the "knowledge". After 10 years of taking advantage of every possible opportunity to learn, we feel we have some information worth sharing.

Last DECOtimes Newsletter we discussed the market trends, where money is being spent and how it is affecting your earning potential. This issue I'd like to share what I see as a manufacturer and job site consultant.

Industry Shared Insight

v1i2-A.jpgMore and more contractors/installers are reporting to me that renovations are the key to continuing their earning potential. This seems to be the same for commercial properties as well as residential properties. For example, many commercial properties renovate every couple of years. The project to the left was the Hampton Inn Mesa, AZ that wanted to add new life to their common areas. The contractor was Mike Egosque of Kamcrete, Mesa, AZ.

I was recently contacted by IKEA of Tempe, AZ. The question they asked was, "could secondary graphics be added to their floor?" My answer was yes: but they must be educated on longevity. A store that renovates its floors on a regular basis probably understands this already but it is a necessity that the contractor covers him/her self.

Secondary treatments after the floor has been sealed are guesswork. If you're not the original contractor you'll be guessing at what products, such as sealers was previously used. Don't be afraid to ask questions. If the client is not sure but is reasonable to work with, do your homework and then get the client to sign off on what you intend to do before you start the work. The key here "is the client reasonable". I know; it's hard to walk away from work when jobs are not in abundance, but in the long run, it's harder to loose money just to keep busy. I hear this all the time... "I took the job just to keep my crew busy but I lost my shirt on it". Don't take a bath on someone else's work or a client's changes.
